SmartVest is a low-cost, one of its kind, unique and useful navigation solution for the blind and visually impaired people of this world. It is a true wearable Vest, which gives real time spoken feedback in order to avoid the obstacles that are in front and back of its users.

Hence giving the user a stress-free and effective assisted navigation, resulting in the revolution on terms of their mobility. This kind is solution giving real time audio output, which is one the most useful and intuitive feedback form for a visually impaired person, is first of its kind and such solution is not present anywhere in the world yet.

SmartVest improves upon all of the underlying issues of the current alternative solutions and offers a better suited navigation solution for obstacle detection and notifying. Meanwhile being a wearable device, which is much easier to use and practical for usage, our plan is to make it a one-stop-solution giving all the features present in the low-cost Indian products to the costlier international products and a better output and overall functionality.

The device works as the following, the sensors scan for any obstacles in the vicinity of the user and report its location (distance & direction) to the central circuit where it is converted into an audio signal which is then spoken out to the user through a small speaker in the units of feet (“obstacle at x feet in front”).

So the user can simply wear it and go for their commute. The sensors keep scanning for any obstacle in both directions, covering the user upto 15 feet in each direction.

There is also an Alert Action setup for the emergency cases, like something coming very close to the user (less than a critical distance, e.g. 3 feet) or if a body approaches very rapidly towards the user (like a vehicle or a person).

Basic navigation of visually impaired people is a fundamental problem yet unsolved. Outdoor navigation is becoming a harder task for them in the increasingly complex urban world. The technology and the solutions available for navigation of the blind are not sufficient and the size of the problem is huge with a large number of affected people.

India is considered as the Blind capital of the world. For instance, there are more than 3.2 crore Blind people in India alone, which is more than the total population of a small country like Nepal. Total number of visually impaired people requiring assistance in navigation is more than 7 crore in India.

40% of visually impaired people live in India alone. Globally the number of visually impaired people is 500M+

The current version of SmartVest establishes the basic functionality of an effective assistance in navigation and mobility. Packaged in a wearable assembly, making it much easier to use and giving real time spoken feedback.

Summary

The Blind and visually impaired people face a lot of difficulties in their life, especially in the outdoor navigation in the current times of rapid urbanization. This fundamental problem of mobility and navigation is yet unsolved. Resulting in issues in their financial well-being and social assimilation and overall quality of life.

The size of this problem is huge with more than 3 crore blind people in India alone which is surprisingly more than the total population of a country like Nepal. India is considered as blind capital of the world with more than half of the global Visually Impaired population living in India. In total there are more than 10 crore visually impaired people in India.

The global numbers stand at more than 5 crore blind and more than 50 crore visually impaired in the urgent need of an assistive solution.

This is where SmartVest comes in which is the world’s first of its kind wearable assistive navigation solution for the visually impaired. Providing real time audio feedback for detecting and avoiding incoming obstacles while walking (for the first time in an assistive tech solution).

Voice Assistants and Smart Speakers:

    • Unique in the world feature of real time vocal interaction through smart speakers, providing the user a human voiced assistance, a buddy who’s always there for you.

Wearable Devices:

    • Being in wearable form, makes it comfortable and easier to use, leaving both the hand usable for other tasks.

Obstacle Detection:

    • The vest is equipped with sensors to detect obstacles in the user’s path and provide real time spoken feedback, audible prompts and vibration patterns.

Multi-language support:

    • The vest can be configured in Hindi, English or any other Indian or International language of your preference.

The current problem

In the current scenario, the available assistive navigation solutions like smart canes, smart glasses etc. are not doing a very good job and remain lying in the cupboards of the users after buying. They are impractical and ineffective as most of them are hand-held, single sensor mount difficult to hold devices, relying on vibrational & haptic feedback, for notifying the user about any obstacle in their path. Along with a lot of functional disadvantages, for example- line of sight issues with hand held devices (stick needed to be kept straight at all times), manual alignment and lack of an intuitive feedback.

Although, there are many initiatives and program by the government and health ministries throughout the world to make their life easier, but there’s hasn’t been any significant progress in the area of assisted navigation of blind people.

There are a few technical products available, but the scope of use and their effectiveness is not practical and reliable as all of them rely on vibrational feedback.

The most widely used tool by is the conventional white cane, which is rather primitive as it doesn’t help the user greatly. (Its use is confined to area below the knee-level of the user and within the vicinity covered by the length of the stick)

SmartVest improves upon all of the underlying issues of the current solutions and offers a better suited navigation solution in terms of giving the real-time audio feedback for obstacle detection and notifying. Meanwhile being a wearable device, it is much easier to use and practical for usage, giving all the features present in the low-cost Indian products to the costlier international products and a better output and overall functionality.

Being in a wearable form it has many practical advantages over the current alternatives which are mostly handheld single sensor, needed to be manually aligned all the time. Whereas SmartVest offers a handsfree functionality and torso part of the body being the most stable part of the body while walking provides better feedback along with no need for manual alignment as well as offering upper body protection with an extended range (up to 15 feet).

USP:

Whereas SmartVest offers a hands-free functionality and torso part of the body being the most stable part of the body while walking provides better feedback along with no need for alignment.

The key differentiation of SmartVest is that:

  1. It gives real time spoken output to user for navigation. (One of its kind in world)
  2. Easy to use device with more range i.e., being wearable, working in two directions (front & back) with range 10-15 feet
  3. Offers multi-language support, all Indian and International languages.
  4. Low cost and at par with all the national and international substitutes, offering more value and features within a low budget.

The technology

SmartVest uses embedded electronics and microprocessors along with the ultrasonic sensors, that throw out sound waves and calculate the time of flight of the returning wave which is then converted to distance data and spoken out through a low power shoulder mounted speaker.

Basically the concept of Echolocation with the help of electronics.

Fundamentally, it is a system for converting and providing real time spoken (audio) output of the measured data into relevant units, e.g., speaking out distance from a nearby obstacle or solid body.

The Solution

We’re working on solving a very fundamental problem of Visually impaired people i.e. basic mobility & navigation through our product ‘SmartVest’ which is world’s first of its kind navigation solution for the visually impaired, providing a real time spoken feedback for detecting and avoiding incoming obstacles while walking (for the first time in an assistive tech solution).

It is a useful and cost-effective assistive solution making it a revolutionary product with its diverse utility set and features that are unique in its own.

All of it integrated in a cool & fashionable wearable assembly which doesn’t make them stand apart and shouts disability.

The Future

The final version planned is a one stop solution providing all the utility that a visually impaired person needs,  starting from basic navigation to more advanced tasks like object recognition and image processing needed to perform many useful daily activities like recognizing a person, common occurring objects like a wall, a tree, a table, a car etc. to recognizing shop names, currency notes, grocery products while shopping and even reading texts like road signs, newspaper, textbooks in case of students.

Hence resulting in their financial well-being, societal assimilation and overall upliftment of the nation’s economy.
